These are some terms you might come across as you learn more or discuss about breast cancer.

A - E

Biopsy

A biopsy is a procedure where a sample of tissue is extracted from an abnormality in the breast, and then tested. There are many methods of obtaining the sample, and your doctor can recommend the best method. A biopsy is a safe procedure and is the most accurate way to check if cancer is present.

Breast Reconstruction

Reconstruction of the breast(s) mainly involves using implants or drawing tissue from other parts of the body to restore the appearance after mastectomy.

Chemotherapy

Administering powerful drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Drugs can be given orally or by injection.

Clinical Trials

This refers to the study of new treatments to evaluate their effectiveness and safety.

Hormone Therapy

Hormonal therapy blocks hormones that some breast cancers need to grow. 

Immunotherapy

This treatment boosts the body’s immune system to fight against cancer cells.

K - O

Lumpectomy

This means removing the lump or tumour, and a portion of the surrounding breast tissue. Most of the breast is still preserved.

Lymph Nodes

Small structures that help fight infection. Cancer spread to lymph nodes impacts staging and treatment.

Mastectomy

This refers to removing the entire breast tissue, sometimes including lymph nodes under the arm.

Personalised Care 

Treatment for each patient depends on the type of cancer, stage, overall health, preferences, needs and means.

Radiation Therapy

Using high-energy rays to shrink tumours or destroy cancer cells.

Support Systems

Emotional and practical support from family, friends, healthcare providers, support groups, communities & networks are essential for patients in their breast cancer journey.

Targeted Therapy

This refers to therapy that targets specific molecules in cancer cells to halt their growth.

Treatment Options 

Tailored to the type and stage of breast cancer, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
